Date: Wednesday 1 July 2009
Time: All day
Venue: Central London (venue TBC)
Who is it for?
Any frontline, second tier or infrastructure voluntary and community organisations that are concerned about advancing women’s rights and equality.
What's it about?
A key feature in the development of human rights is women’s rights, highlighted by the fact that one of the core United Nations Treaties is devoted to ending ‘all forms of discrimination against women’. The training, delivered by the British Institute for Human Rights (BIHR) and WRC, will provide participants with essential human rights knowledge and skills to support their work with and for women in the UK.
It will offer a good understanding of the development of women’s rights as human rights, the Human Rights Act and CEDAW, and how these can be practically applied and influenced to advance equality and justice for women in the UK. The course will demonstrate that human rights have enormous potential to be used in practical ways to strengthen advocacy services and lobbying, and to negotiate change in policy and service delivery for women.
What will I take away?
Participants will gain practical knowledge and skills about:
- The origins, principles and development of human rights and how they relate to the women’s rights and equality.
- Human rights law, focussing on international and UK human rights instruments (the UK’s Human Rights Act and CEDAW).
- The articles of the Human Rights Act and how they relate to women’s issues in practice.
- The CEDAW framework for addressing women’s inequality and discrimination.
- Applying and testing human rights to case studies
- Developing an action plan for your organisation.
